Aluminium Bulkhead Gate Design — Hydrostatic Pressure & AS1664.2 Compliance
At ESD, we specialise in aluminium bulkhead gate design for water control and isolation systems — combining practical engineering with rigorous standards compliance.
This in-house project demonstrates our expertise in designing a hydrostatic pressure-resistant gate using both manual calculations and finite element analysis (FEA), verified to AS/NZS 1664.2 (Aluminium Structures) and AS/NZS 1170.1 (Structural Design Actions).
The objective was to produce a robust, corrosion-resistant, and easily fabricated gate structure suitable for real-world water management applications.

Design Objectives & Methodology
The design process balanced structural analysis and fabrication practicality to achieve high strength with minimal weight.
Key objectives included:
- Withstand full hydrostatic pressure under design head conditions
- Ensure structural efficiency through aluminium section optimisation
- Minimise weld-induced stress concentration
- Maintain simple assembly for workshop fabrication
Manual hand calculations were carried out for plate bending, weld strength, and frame stiffness — referencing AS1664.2: Aluminium Structures – Allowable Stress Design.
Results were cross-checked through FEA simulation to validate maximum stress and deflection across the gate panel and supporting frame.
